Positional shooting is the backbone of practical rifle work, but most shooters only practice it one stance at a time. This drill forces you to chain all three major positions — standing, kneeling, and prone — in a single string of fire at 100 yards. The result is an honest snapshot of how well you move between positions while maintaining accuracy on a single point of aim.

Set one IPSC target at 100 yards (100 m). Start standing, rifle loaded, safety on. On the beep: fire two rounds standing, transition to kneeling and fire two more, then drop to prone and fire the last two. Par time is 20 seconds for six total rounds. Every hit inside the A zone counts; anything outside means you rushed the position instead of building it. The 20-second window is generous enough to be achievable but tight enough that sloppy transitions will cost you.

Track your time and hits separately — a clean 22-second run beats a ragged 18-second run with flyers. Once you’re consistently under 20 with six A-zone hits, tighten the par to 17 seconds or push the target to 150 yards. Add a magazine change between positions for an advanced variant that punishes fumbled reloads under positional stress.

Range Setup

firing line T1 1. STANDING (2 rds) 2. KNEELING (2 rds) 3. PRONE (2 rds) 100 yd 100 m

Setup

1x IPSC target at 100 yd (100 m). Rifle with loaded magazine, safety on. Start standing. Shot timer required. Clear lane with enough depth for prone position.

Scoring

Count A-zone hits out of 6 rounds.
6/6 A-zone hits under 20 seconds = excellent.
5/6 A-zone hits under 20 seconds = passing.
Any miss or hit outside A-zone = note which position caused it.
Log total time and hits per position separately for diagnostics.

Tips

Build each position before pressing the trigger. A half-second spent settling into a solid kneeling or prone platform saves you the two seconds a miss will cost on the scorecard.

Progression

Tighten par time from 20 to 17 seconds with clean hits.
Push target distance to 150 yd (137 m).
Add a mandatory magazine change between each position.
Reverse the order: start prone, work up to standing.
Run it on a B-8 bullseye for tighter scoring.
