Snap shots at 100 yards are a litmus test for a rifle shooter’s fundamental package. The drill compresses the complete firing cycle — prone position, natural point of aim, respiratory pause, trigger press, and safety reengagement — into a single timed event. One round, one target, one clock. There is nowhere to hide if your position, breathing, or trigger press has a flaw.

Set an 8-inch circle at 100 yards (100 m). Start prone with the rifle up, safety on, sights in the general target area. On the beep: disengage the safety, control your breath, acquire the sight picture on center, and press the trigger. Immediately reengage the safety. Par time is 4.0 seconds per rep. The shot must land inside the 8-inch circle. If you are breaking position after the shot to check the hit — you rushed. Stay in position and let the recoil settle naturally.

Track hit percentage, not just time. The goal is 5 for 5 inside the circle under 4.0 seconds. Once that is consistent, compress the par to 3.0 seconds. When 100 yards feels automatic, move to 150 yards and reset par to 5.0 seconds. For a harder test, hold prone for 30 seconds before the beep — elevated heart rate exposes any wobble in your respiratory control.

Range Setup

T1 · 8″firing lineSTART (prone)100 yd / 100 m

Setup

1x 8-inch circle (or B-8 paper target) at 100 yd (100 m). Rifle loaded, safety on. Start prone, rifle shouldered, natural point of aim on the target. Shot timer required.

Scoring

1 round inside the 8-inch circle under 4.0 seconds = pass per rep.
Missed circle = fail the rep regardless of time.
Over 4.0 seconds = fail the rep regardless of hit.
Goal: 5 for 5 clean passes per session.
Log string time and hit location for each rep.

Tips

Do not wait for a perfect sight picture — settle for good enough and press. Chasing perfection at 100 yards costs more time than a slightly imperfect but clean trigger break.

Progression

Reduce par time from 4.0 toward 3.0 seconds once 5/5 is consistent.
Move target to 150 yd (137 m) and reset par to 5.0 seconds.
Shoot from kneeling unsupported to increase challenge.
Hold prone 30 seconds before the beep to simulate exertion.
Add a standing-to-prone transition — reset par to 8.0 seconds.
