The Delta Shift drill compresses three movement directions — a diagonal sprint, a lateral walk, and a diagonal retreat — into a compact three-cone pattern. Each direction demands a different speed, and the transitions between them are where most shooters fall apart. The sprint-to-walk shift at the front cone and the walk-to-retreat shift at the opposite front cone both require instant throttle control to keep rounds on target.
Set 2 targets 5-7 yd (5-7 m) apart. Place 2 cones 10 yd (10 m) up-range from and in-line with the targets. Set a 3rd cone 5 yd (5 m) up-range from the first two, centered between them to form a triangle. Start at the back cone in low ready, facing downrange. On the buzzer, sprint diagonally to the front cone in line with T1 and engage T1 with 1 round. Transition to T2 and walk laterally toward the opposite front cone, engaging T2 with 3–4 rounds while moving. At the second front cone, retreat diagonally back to the back cone. Decelerate, spin to face downrange, and engage T1 with 1 round. Run it both directions. Total: 5–6 rounds per rep.
The lateral walk is the diagnostic phase. If your walking hits scatter, slow the lateral speed until the group tightens. If the static shot after the retreat is consistently off, your deceleration and spin need work — you’re pulling the trigger before the platform settles. Once both phases produce clean hits, add a par time and push the sprint speed between cones.
2 targets (IPSC, USPSA, or paper silhouette) 5-7 yd (5-7 m) apart.
3 cones forming an inverted triangle:
- 2 front cones: 10 yd (10 m) up-range from the targets, in-line with the targets.
- 1 back cone: 5 yd (5 m) up-range from the front cones, centered between them.
Pistol or rifle loaded, at low ready.
Start position: standing at the back cone, facing downrange.
Run the drill in both lateral directions.
5-6 rounds total per rep.
All rounds must land in the scoring zone (A zone or equivalent).
Static shots (at the first front cone and at the back cone after retreat) must be clean before moving.
Walking shots are scored on group size — compare to static shots.
A miss from any position or phase is a failed rep.
Once hits are consistent, score on total time with a shot timer.
Scoring: Hit Factor (HF) = points ÷ time. USPSA target zones: A = 5, C = 3, D = 1, Miss = −10. Higher HF = better performance.
Maintain a ready position at each stop and through the lateral walk — keep the gun up and eyes on the target to enhance speed in transitions.
Add a par time once both directions produce clean hits.
Require all A-zone hits — any C or D is a failed rep.
Increase lateral walking speed while maintaining group size.
Increase target spacing to 7 yd (7 m) to widen the triangle.
Move the back cone to 7 yd (7 m) behind the front cones to lengthen the sprints.
Start from the holster instead of low ready.
Run with rifle if trained with pistol, or vice versa.
