Source: Dynamic Shooting Drill
Lateral movement changes everything about your shooting platform. The Escalator builds the skill progressively — one round at the start, two from the first barricade, three from the far barricade, then a full sprint back for four more. Each transition gets longer and each position demands more hits, forcing you to manage speed versus accuracy as the drill scales up.
Place 3 targets downrange: T1 and T2 are 4 yd (4 m) apart, T3 is 7 yd (6 m) from T2. Set a start cone 7 yd (6 m) uprange from T1. Place a barrel barricade 3 yd (3 m) to the right of the cone and a second barrel barricade 7 yd (6 m) further right. Holster your pistol or sling your rifle. At the beep, draw and fire 1 round on T1 from the cone, move laterally to the first barricade and fire 2 rounds on T2 from the right side, sprint to the far barricade and fire 3 rounds on T3, then turn and sprint back to the start cone for 4 rounds on T1. Total: 10 rounds. Benchmark: 5.00 HF for both rifle and pistol.
The escalating round count per position is the diagnostic. If your first round on T1 is clean but the 4-round string at the end falls apart, the issue is cardiovascular recovery after the return sprint. If T3 from the far barricade is your weakest position, practice entering lateral positions at distance. Track times for each segment separately — the sprint back to the start will reveal whether you can decelerate and shoot accurately after a hard direction change.
3 targets (IPSC, USPSA, or paper silhouette): T1 and T2 placed 4 yd (4 m) apart, T3 placed 7 yd (6 m) from T2.
1 start cone placed 7 yd (6 m) uprange from T1.
1 barrel barricade placed 3 yd (3 m) to the right of the start cone.
1 barrel barricade placed 7 yd (6 m) to the right of the first barricade.
Rifle or pistol, loaded, holstered or at low ready.
Start position: standing behind the start cone, facing downrange.
10 rounds total per rep (1 + 2 + 3 + 4).
All rounds scored A-zone.
Benchmark: 5.00 HF (rifle and pistol).
Head shots are hit or miss only.
Track segment times separately to identify weak transitions.
A miss from any position is a failed rep.
Scoring: Hit Factor (HF) = points ÷ time. USPSA target zones: A = 5, C = 3, D = 1, Miss = −10. Higher HF = better performance.
Prioritize your eyes during lateral movement — look where you are going to decelerate, not at the target, until you are ready to set up and shoot.
Add a par time once all hits are clean.
Reverse the drill — start at the far barricade and work back.
Require head-box-only hits from the far barricade to force precision at distance.
Increase barricade spacing to 10 yd (9 m) and 15 yd (14 m) for longer sprints.
Add a reload between the far barricade and the return sprint.
Run strong-hand-only from the first barricade.
