Distance hides errors that close range forgives. The Horizon Press forces you to prove your rifle fundamentals at 10, 15, 25, and 50 yd (9, 14, 23, and 46 m) — then immediately tests whether those fundamentals survive a full sprint. The drill splits into two phases: Phase 1 records individual times at each distance standing still, Phase 2 chains all four distances together while sprinting forward. Your combined score across all five timed segments is the only number that matters.
Place 2 targets 1-3 yd (1-3 m) apart. Set a cone or barrel at 10, 15, 25, and 50 yd (9, 14, 23, and 46 m). Load two magazines with 20 rounds each. Phase 1: start at the 10 yd cone at low ready, fire 5 rounds on T1 lower A-zone, record the time. Repeat at 15, 25, and 50 yd — four individual splits. Change magazines. Phase 2: reset at 50 yd, fire 5 rounds on T2, sprint to 25 and fire 5, sprint to 15 and fire 5, sprint to 10 and fire 5 — one continuous clock. Combine all five times for your total score. Benchmark: 3.00 HF rifle.
Compare your Phase 1 times to isolate which distance costs you the most. If your 50 yd split is double the 25 yd split, the issue is sight picture acquisition at range, not trigger control. In Phase 2, compare sprinting times to Phase 1 standing times at the same distances — the delta reveals how much accuracy you lose under cardiovascular load. Close that gap by running Phase 2 at slower paces until the groups match, then increase speed.
2 targets (IPSC, USPSA, or paper silhouette) placed 1-3 yd (1-3 m) apart.
4 cones or barrels placed in a line at 10, 15, 25, and 50 yd (9, 14, 23, and 46 m) from the targets.
Rifle with 2 magazines, 20 rounds each.
Start position (Phase 1): standing at the 10 yd cone, rifle at low ready.
Start position (Phase 2): standing at the 50 yd cone, rifle at low ready.
40 rounds total (20 per phase).
All rounds must land in the lower A-zone.
Phase 1: record individual times at 10, 15, 25, and 50 yd (4 splits).
Phase 2: one continuous time from 50 yd sprint to 10 yd (1 split).
Combine all 5 times for total score.
Benchmark: Rifle hit factor 3.00 HF.
Scoring: Hit Factor (HF) = points ÷ time. USPSA target zones: A = 5, C = 3, D = 1, Miss = −10. Higher HF = better performance.
Maintain a good mount and stock connection to the rifle — recoil management breaks down first at distance and under fatigue.
Run Phase 1 only to build distance confidence before adding Phase 2.
Run Phase 2 only to isolate the sprint-and-shoot component.
Add a par time per distance once groups are consistent.
Require upper A-zone or head box only.
Increase to 10 rounds per position (4 magazines total).
Add a fifth position at 75 yd (69 m) or 100 yd (91 m).
