Most movement drills train one direction at a time. The Lightning bolt stacks three — a backward sprint, a lateral sprint, and a diagonal retreat — into a single six-round sequence. Every transition requires a full stop, platform reset, and clean engagement before the next sprint. The path traces a lightning bolt on the ground, which is where the name comes from.
Set 2 targets 5-7 yd (5-7 m) apart. Place Cone 1 at 7 yd (7 m) from Target 1, directly in line. Set Cone 2 at 5 yd (5 m) up-range from Cone 1. Place Cone 3 at 5 yd (5 m) left or right of Cone 2 at the same depth. Set Cone 4 at 10 yd (10 m) directly up-range from Cone 2. Start at Cone 1, holstered, facing up-range. On the buzzer, sprint straight back to Cone 2, spin to face downrange, draw, and engage T1 with 2 rounds. Sprint laterally to Cone 3 and engage T2 with 2 rounds. Retreat back at 45 degrees to Cone 4 and engage T1 with 2 rounds. Run it left and right — Cone 3 goes both directions. Total: 6 rounds.
The three movement directions expose three different weaknesses. The backward sprint tests your deceleration and spin. The lateral sprint tests your change-of-direction footwork. The diagonal retreat tests your ability to cover ground while maintaining muzzle awareness. If one direction consistently produces worse hits, that’s where your movement training needs work. Once the basic version is clean, replace the lateral sprint between Cones 2 and 3 with a controlled walk and add rounds on T2 while moving — that variation builds throttle control between the explosive phases.
2 targets (IPSC, USPSA, or paper silhouette) 5-7 yd (5-7 m) apart.
4 cones:
- Cone 1: 7 yd (7 m) from Target 1, directly in line.
- Cone 2: 5 yd (5 m) up-range from Cone 1.
- Cone 3: 5 yd (5 m) left or right of Cone 2, at the same depth.
- Cone 4: 10 yd (10 m) directly up-range from Cone 2.
Pistol loaded, holstered.
Start position: standing at Cone 1, facing up-range (away from targets).
Run the drill in both lateral directions (Cone 3 left and right).
6 rounds total per rep.
All rounds must land in the scoring zone (A zone or equivalent).
Each engagement is static — the platform must be fully settled before firing.
A miss or a shot fired while still moving is a failed rep.
Once hits are consistent, score on total time with a shot timer.
Scoring: Hit Factor (HF) = points ÷ time. USPSA target zones: A = 5, C = 3, D = 1, Miss = −10. Higher HF = better performance.
Stay focused on your body’s position throughout — strong change-of-direction footwork and muzzle awareness are more important than raw speed.
Replace the lateral sprint between Cones 2 and 3 with a controlled walk and add 2 rounds on Target 2 while moving (throttle control variation).
Add a par time once all three directions produce clean hits.
Require all A-zone hits — any C or D is a failed rep.
Start from concealment instead of open holster.
Increase the distance between Cone 2 and Cone 4 to 15 yd (15 m).
Run both sides in the same session to expose lateral bias.
