Most movement drills test lateral speed or straight-line sprints. The Long-Range Sting tests something harder: diagonal change of direction combined with a precision requirement that punishes rushed deceleration. Three cones form a V shape in front of a single target — two at 10 yd (9 m) and one at 20 yd (18 m). The shooter engages body shots from the close cones and a single headshot from the far cone, forcing a dramatic shift in throttle between speed and precision.
Start at Cone 1 at low ready. On the signal, engage the target with 5 rounds to the body. Move back at a 45-degree angle to Cone 2 — the far cone at 20 yd (18 m) — and fire 1 round to the head. Sprint diagonally forward to Cone 3 and put 5 more rounds into the body. Total: 11 rounds. The single headshot at Cone 2 is the throttle-control moment — you just ran backwards with elevated heart rate and need one precise hit at double the distance.
Track time with a shot timer and compare against a clean scorecard: all body shots in the A zone, headshot in the head box. The Cone 2 headshot is the diagnostic — if it opens up or misses, you are not decelerating enough before the engagement. Slow the retreat until the head shot is consistent, then build speed back in. Optional variations: weapon transition between Cones 2 and 3, shooting on the move between Cones 2 and 3, headshots only at all positions, or A-zone/C-steel only for a speed-focused variant.
1 target (IPSC, USPSA, or paper silhouette).
3 cones arranged in a V pattern:
- Cone 1: 10 yd (9 m) from the target, offset left.
- Cone 3: 10 yd (9 m) from the target, offset right.
- Cone 2: 20 yd (18 m) from the target, centered directly behind.
Rifle or pistol, loaded, at low ready.
Start position: standing at Cone 1, facing the target.
11 rounds total per rep.
5 body shots from Cone 1 — all must land in the A zone.
1 head shot from Cone 2 — must hit the head box.
5 body shots from Cone 3 — all must land in the A zone.
Any miss is a failed rep.
Once hits are consistent, score on total time with a shot timer.
Scoring: Hit Factor (HF) = points ÷ time. USPSA target zones: A = 5, C = 3, D = 1, Miss = −10. Higher HF = better performance.
The head shot at Cone 2 is the diagnostic — if it opens up, you are not decelerating enough before the engagement.
Add a par time once all 11 hits are consistent.
Require all A-zone body hits — any C or D fails the rep.
Shoot on the move between Cones 2 and 3 instead of stopping to engage.
Weapon transition between Cones 2 and 3 (rifle to pistol or vice versa).
Headshots only at all three cones.
A-zone / C-steel shots only for a speed-focused variant.
Increase distance — Cones 1 and 3 to 15 yd (14 m), Cone 2 to 25 yd (23 m).
