Most shooters can reload standing still. Fewer can do it while their feet are moving and the clock is running. Reload On The Move isolates the one skill that separates a static range habit from a match-ready mechanic: completing a full reload in transit so the gun is up on target the instant you arrive at your next position. If you fumble the mag or coast to a stop before seating it, you’re giving away time you’ll never get back. Works with pistol or rifle — same mechanic, different distance.

From P1, draw and fire 3 rounds on T1. On the last shot, the slide or bolt locks back. Begin moving laterally toward P2 (7 yards apart) and execute a reload while in motion. The goal is to have the gun loaded, up, and on T2 before your feet reach P2 — then fire 3 more rounds. Pistol at 7 yards: IDPA-style (mags loaded with 3 rounds only) par is 5.75 seconds, USPSA max-capacity par is 5.00 seconds. Rifle variant runs the same drill at 25 yards — the reload mechanic is identical but the longer distance punishes sloppy shots after the reload. Run both directions to work muzzle management under the 180-degree rule.

Track your reload split in isolation — the window between the last shot on T1 and the first shot on T2 tells you exactly where the time lives. When 90% of your hits land in the A-zone under par, tighten the par or add a third position. Work the drill in both directions every session to keep muzzle discipline honest on both sides.

Setup

2x IPSC targets (T1 and T2) spaced 5 yd apart. Two shooter positions P1 and P2, 7 yd apart laterally. Pistol: targets at 7 yd (6 m). Rifle: targets at 25 yd (23 m). Holstered pistol or low-ready rifle. Two magazines: first loaded with 3 rounds (slide-lock variant) or full (max-cap variant). Shot timer required.

Scoring

Each round scored on IPSC/USPSA zones.
A = 5 pt, C = 3 pt, D = 1 pt, Miss = 0 pt.
Any shot over time standard counts as a miss.
Possible: 30 (100%), Good: 27 (90%), Pass: 24 (80%).
Pistol IDPA slide-lock par: 5.75 sec.
Pistol USPSA max-cap par: 5.00 sec.
Rifle: adjust par based on reload platform (bolt release vs charging handle).

Tips

Focus on seating the magazine before your feet stop moving. The reload must be complete in transit — coasting to a halt and then finishing the reload defeats the purpose of the drill.

Progression

Push the reload split under 2.0 seconds while maintaining A-zone hits.
Run the drill in both directions every session.
Add a third position and a second reload for an extended string.
Move pistol targets to 10 yd or rifle targets to 50 yd to stress accuracy.
Run pistol variant from concealment to add draw complexity.
