Safe manipulation isn’t a beginner topic you graduate from — it’s the habit that decides whether you’re an asset or a liability the moment a timer goes off. The rule is simple: muzzle off target, safety on. The trigger finger only touches the trigger when the sights are on the target and you’ve decided to fire. Every other moment — moving, reloading, clearing a stoppage, scanning — the finger lives indexed straight along the receiver. This drill exists to make those two facts feel automatic, so they don’t compete with anything else in your head when the pressure is real.

No ammunition, no targets, no live fire. Pick up the rifle, confirm it’s clear (no magazine, bolt locked, chamber visually checked, then closed). Shoulder the rifle in a low or high ready, safety on, finger indexed. On your own count, mount the rifle to the firing position, sights on an aim point on the wall, click the safety off, press the trigger to a deliberate dry break, ride the trigger forward, and the second the sights leave that aim point click the safety back on and index your finger. That’s one rep. Run thirty reps in a fifteen-minute block, slow and clean. No timer. No racing. The point is the sequence — safety off only inside the shot, safety on the instant the muzzle moves.

When the pattern is automatic standing still, layer it onto everything else. Run it during a dry magazine change. Run it walking three steps and re-mounting. Run it from kneeling. Run it after a simulated stoppage. If the safety doesn’t go on every single time the muzzle leaves your aim point, you haven’t built the habit yet — you’re still thinking about it. This drill belongs in every shooter’s week, not just the first one.

Setup

Cleared rifle. No magazine inserted. Bolt locked back, chamber visually and physically checked clear, then bolt closed on an empty chamber. Pick a safe aim point on a wall (not a person, not a window). Standing, low or high ready, safety on, finger indexed along the receiver. No ammunition anywhere in the room. Plan a 15-minute dry block.

Scoring

Pass / fail per rep, self-scored.
Pass: safety came off only after the sights settled on the aim point, and went back on the instant the muzzle left it. Finger never touched the trigger outside the shot.
Fail: safety late, finger early, or any break in the sequence — reset and run the rep again.
Goal: 30 clean reps in a 15-minute block.

Tips

The safety goes on the moment the muzzle leaves the aim point — not when you lower the rifle, not when you finish the thought. The instant. If you have to remind yourself, you haven't built the habit yet.

Progression

Once 30 standing reps are clean, layer the same safety/finger pattern onto a dry magazine change.
Then onto three steps of movement and a re-mount.
Then from kneeling and prone.
Then after a simulated stoppage clearance.
The benchmark is that the safety pattern never breaks regardless of what else you're doing.
