Every range day with a rifle starts with the same question: is the zero still good? Most shooters skip the answer and burn an entire session chasing a problem they could have caught in ten rounds. This drill gives you both halves of the picture — the rifle’s mechanical zero from a stable platform, and your own ability to deliver that zero without a bag under the fore-end.

Set up one precision target at 50 yards (50 m) and get prone. First string: 5 rounds from a supported position — bipod, pack, sandbag, whatever you’d use to confirm the gun. Slow, deliberate, no time pressure. Measure the group in centimeters or inches. Under 8 cm (3 in) means the zero is still honest. Second string: 5 rounds from prone unsupported, same target, same pace. Under 12 cm (4.7 in) means your position is holding up. If either string opens up, the diagnosis tells you whether to chase the rifle or chase yourself.

Once a sub-5 cm (2 in) supported group at 50 is the norm, move out to 100 yards and rebuild the benchmark there. Run this drill at the start of every rifle session that matters — match prep, load development, optic swap, anything where you can’t afford to find out at distance.

Range Setup

Setup

1x precision target at 50 yd (50 m). Prone position. First string supported (bipod, pack, sandbag). Second string prone unsupported. No timer needed.

Scoring

Measure each 5-shot group in centimeters or inches.
Supported group < 8 cm (3 in) = OK.
Unsupported group < 12 cm (4.7 in) = OK.
If either fails, diagnose the rifle (supported) or the position (unsupported) before moving on.

Tips

If the zero looks off, never adjust after one shot. Fire a 3-round group, find the center of that group, then adjust off the center. Single shots lie about where the rifle is actually pointing.

Progression

When the supported group is consistently under 5 cm (2 in) at 50 yd, move out to 100 yd and rebuild the benchmark there.
Add a third string from a kneeling or seated position once prone unsupported is locked in.
