The Shift Drill trains the exact movement pattern you’ll use on any stage that mixes a slow, precise shooting window with a hard run to the next position. You walk laterally while feeding rounds into the first target, then switch gears into a full sprint, decelerate, square up, and break one clean shot on a second target downrange. It’s a bridge drill — it takes the footwork from Lateral Walk + Engage and bolts on the sprint-and-stop mechanics from a positional transition.

Set two targets 7-10 yd (7-10 m) apart. Set Cone 1 7-10 yd (7-10 m) downrange from T1. Set Cone 2 three yards (3 m) lateral from Cone 1. Set Cone 3 another 7-10 yd (7-10 m) lateral from Cone 2, so it sits 7-10 yd (7-10 m) downrange from T2. Start at Cone 1 in low ready. On the go signal, lateral walk the 3 yd (3 m) to Cone 2 while putting 3-5 rounds on T1 — half-ready stance, knees bent, hips dropped, upper body quiet. Drive out of Cone 2 into a sprint toward Cone 3. Decelerate by chopping the feet and lowering the hips, face downrange, and break one clean shot on T2.

Judge the rep on three things: the walk, the stop, and the hits. The walk should be smooth enough that the sight picture never collapses and every round on T1 lands in the scoring zone. The deceleration is where most reps fall apart — if you arrive at Cone 3 still drifting and try to shoot through the stop, the sight picture won’t be there. Plant the feet first, then break the shot on T2. Run it in both directions. This drill belongs in the rotation for anyone training stage movement, tactical games, or defensive shooting where the fight starts slow and ends fast.

Setup

2 targets (IPSC or USPSA) set 7-10 yd (7-10 m) apart.
3 cones placed on the shooter's line, parallel to the target line.
Cone 1: 7-10 yd (7-10 m) downrange from Target 1 — the start position.
Cone 2: 3 yd (3 m) lateral from Cone 1 — end of the walk.
Cone 3: 7-10 yd (7-10 m) lateral from Cone 2 — end of the sprint, 7-10 yd (7-10 m) downrange from Target 2.
Pistol loaded, holstered or in low ready at Cone 1.
Start position: standing at Cone 1, low ready, facing downrange toward Target 1.
Run the drill in both directions — left-to-right and right-to-left.

Scoring

3-5 rounds on T1 (during the lateral walk) + 1 round on T2 (after the sprint and stop) per rep.
All rounds in the A zone / scoring zone = clean pass.
Any round outside the scoring zone or any miss = failed rep.
Footwork counts: any stop, stutter, or bounce during the walk is a fail even with good hits.
Deceleration counts: firing on T2 while still drifting forward is a fail even if the round lands in the zone.
Scoring: Hit Factor (HF) = points ÷ time. USPSA target zones: A = 5, C = 3, D = 1, Miss = −10. Higher HF = better performance.

Tips

Walk in a half-ready position — knees bent, hips slightly lowered — then decelerate by chopping the feet and lowering the hips again before breaking the shot on T2.

Progression

Tighten the scoring standard — all hits in the A zone or tighter.
Add a par time once the footwork is clean.
Stretch the cone spacing toward the 10 yd (10 m) end of the range to lengthen the sprint.
Run it from the holster or concealment instead of low ready.
Add a no-shoot beside T1 to force visual discipline during the moving engagement.
Swap pistol for rifle and re-run at the same distances.
Require 2 rounds on T2 instead of 1 to test that the platform settled after the stop.
