A controlled pair is the gateway between “I can hit” and “I can hit twice in a row.” Most new shooters fire the first shot deliberately and the second one on hope — they flinch the trigger before the sights ever return. This drill breaks that habit in five reps. Two shots, one target, one honest answer to the question of whether you’re actually watching the gun work.

Set up one IPSC target at 5 yards (5 m). Start holstered, hands at sides. Draw and fire two shots. Five reps, ten rounds total. Loose par time of 3.0 seconds per rep — the A zone matters more than the clock. Score each pair: A+A is 10 points, A+C is 8, C+C is 6, any miss is zero. Fifty points is a perfect run. The par time is a ceiling, not a target — if you’re making it at 3.0 clean, trim it down.

Trim the par 0.2 seconds per session until you own a consistent draw-plus-two in the A zone under 2.5 seconds. From there, move the target back to 7 yards and rebuild the benchmark. Once that’s clean, start adding a failure drill finisher — two to the body, one to the head. This drill belongs in almost every pistol session as a warmup.

Range Setup

Setup

1x IPSC target at 5 yd (5 m). Start holstered, hands at sides. Shot timer required for the par.

Scoring

A+A = 10 points.
A+C = 8 points.
C+C = 6 points.
Any miss = 0.
Max score = 50 points over 5 reps.

Tips

Don't snatch the second shot. Let the sights settle back on target, then press — speed shows up on its own once the rep is clean.

Progression

Trim par time 0.2 seconds per session until sub-2.5 is stable with both hits in the A zone.
Move the target back to 7 yd (7 m) and rebuild the benchmark.
Add a failure drill finisher (2 body + 1 head).
