Stage 1 opens the Las Vegas SWAT Carbine Qualification with a simple close-range presentation. From low ready, disengage safety, raise the carbine and fire 2 rounds into the USPSA/IPSC target at 5 yards within 3 seconds.

At 5 yards with a rifle this is not about marksmanship — it is about weapon handling fundamentals. Safety manipulation, mount, sight acquisition, and two clean trigger presses. The 3-second par is generous, so the standard is two A-zone hits, not speed.

The LV SWAT Carbine Qualification is a 50-round, 13-stage course of fire (48 rifle, 2 pistol) using a USPSA/IPSC target. Scoring: A/B zones = 5 pts, C = 4, D = 3. Maximum 250 points, passing at 90% (225 pts). Safety selector must be engaged whenever the weapon is not pointed at the target.

Equipment Required

  • Patrol carbine (AR-15 platform or equivalent) with sling
  • USPSA/IPSC target
  • Minimum 2 rounds of ammunition
  • Shot timer

Range Setup

Setup

Stand facing a USPSA/IPSC target at 5 yards. Carbine loaded, on safe, in low ready position. Shot timer set to 3-second par.

Scoring

IPSC scoring per round: A/B zone = 5 pts, C = 4, D = 3. Max for stage: 10 pts. Part of the 250-point qualification — passing requires 225 pts (90%).

Tips

Disengage the safety as the carbine rises from low ready — do not wait until the stock is fully mounted. The safety click and cheek weld should happen at the same moment.

Progression

Focus on consistent safety-off-to-first-shot time. At 5 yards both rounds should be in the A-zone every time. If not, slow down and build the presentation mechanics first.
