Stage 8 chains three skills at 15 yards: shoot standing, transition to kneeling with an emergency reload, then shoot kneeling. From low ready, fire 2 rounds standing, perform an emergency reload while dropping to a knee, then fire 2 more rounds from kneeling — all within 10 seconds.

This is the first stage that combines position change with a reload under time pressure. The carbine reload is mechanically different from a pistol — the magazine well is higher, the bolt catch is smaller, and the reload must be executed while managing a larger, heavier weapon. Doing this while simultaneously dropping to a knee makes it a genuine test of weapon handling proficiency.

Setup

Stand facing a USPSA/IPSC target at 15 yards. Carbine loaded with 2 rounds, on safe, at low ready. Spare magazine with 2+ rounds in pouch. Shot timer set to 10 seconds.

Scoring

IPSC scoring: A/B = 5, C = 4, D = 3. Max: 20 pts. Single string.

Tips

Start the magazine change as you begin dropping — do not wait until you are kneeling. The bolt catch release should happen as your knee hits the ground. Two motions, one timeline.

Progression

Break it into three phases: (1) low ready to 2 shots standing, (2) reload while kneeling, (3) 2 shots from kneeling. Master each, then chain. Goal: 20/20 under 8 seconds.
