Stage 1 of the Las Vegas SWAT Pistol Qualification opens with a close-range draw-and-shoot string at just 3 yards. You draw from the holster and fire 2 rounds into the USPSA/IPSC target within 3 seconds, then re-holster and repeat for a total of three strings — 6 rounds.
At 3 yards the accuracy standard is high. With IPSC scoring (A/B zones = 5 points, C = 4, D = 3), leaving the A-zone costs points fast. The 3-second par per string is generous at this distance, so the focus should be on clean hits rather than raw speed.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police SWAT Pistol Qualification is a 50-round, 9-stage course of fire using a USPSA/IPSC target. Scoring is points-based: A and B zones score 5 points, C zone scores 4, D zone scores 3. Maximum score is 250 points. The passing threshold is 90% (225 points) — one of the highest qualification standards in US law enforcement.
Equipment Required
Stand facing a USPSA/IPSC target at 3 yards. Pistol loaded and holstered. Hands at your sides or on the belt. Shot timer set to 3-second par.
IPSC scoring per round: A/B zone = 5 pts, C zone = 4 pts, D zone = 3 pts. Miss = 0 pts. Max per string: 10 pts. Max for stage (3 strings): 30 pts. Part of the 250-point qualification — passing requires 225 pts (90%).
At 3 yards, your eyes should confirm the target before the gun arrives. Drive the gun straight to the target — do not arc upward from the holster. Two quick, deliberate shots.
Goal: 30/30 points (all A-zone). Work on a consistent, efficient draw stroke. At 3 yards you should be able to put both rounds in the A-zone with time to spare. If not, slow down and build precision first.
Pistol on the table, hands free, beep. Build the grip and the sight picture as fast as a normal draw…
Trigger Control with a clock. The beep starts you, and the trigger has to break before the beep ends. Match-pace…
From low ready, fire 2 rounds at 10 yards in 3 seconds.
