Pistol Draw Time: How Fast Should Your Draw Be?

A pistol draw time is the interval between the buzzer and the first hit. Not the moment the gun clears leather, not the moment the sights arrive — the hit. Anything else is a number you cannot compare to anyone else’s, including your own from last month.

Measured that way, at 7 yards into an A-zone, most shooters land somewhere between 2 and 3 seconds. Under 2.5 from concealment is carry-ready, under 2 is competitive and under 1.5 is elite. The interesting part is where those seconds actually go, because it is almost never where people assume.

Draw time benchmarks by skill level

Seven yards, one round, hit inside the A-zone or an 8-inch circle. A faster time with the round outside the zone is not a faster draw — it is a different, easier drill.

Be honest about what this table is. Nobody surveys draw times, so there is no published average to quote and anyone presenting one has made it up. These brackets are range-floor convention, and they line up with the pars we set on our own drills: the First Shot Drill runs a 2.0-second par at 7 yards to an A-zone hit, which is the same measurement this table uses. Drawing from a Holster asks for under 2.5 to start and consistently under 2.0 as the target — but note it is shot at 5 yards, where the hit is easier, so it is a teaching standard rather than evidence for the brackets above.

The word doing the work in that last sentence is consistently. One good rep is an accident. Five in a row within a tenth of each other is a draw.

Where the time actually goes

Split a 1.8-second draw into its parts and the shape of the problem changes. The numbers below are an illustrative budget rather than measured data — your own split will differ — but the proportions hold for almost everyone:

Two things fall out of that. First, roughly a tenth of your time is reaction you do not own — chasing a 1.2-second draw means the other three segments must fit into a second. Second, the last two segments are the ones that pay, and they are decided by the first. A grip taken a fraction wrong at the holster cannot be fixed later; it gets fixed on the target, in the form of a settling sight picture and a slow trigger press.

This is why shooters who train the draw by yanking the gun out faster plateau almost immediately. The gun was never the slow part.

What concealment costs

Adding a cover garment typically costs 0.3 to 0.5 seconds, and more if the garment is soft, long, or gets thought about mid-draw. That is the single largest variable in the table above, which makes it the one you must record. A 1.9-second draw from an open competition rig and a 1.9 from under a t-shirt are not the same performance, and comparing them tells you nothing.

Other things that quietly cost time: retention devices (a thumb break or an ALS lever adds a discrete motion, not a faster one), a holster that sits where your hand does not naturally go, and a belt that flexes. None of those are training problems. They are equipment problems that look like training problems on the timer.

Measuring it honestly

Most people’s quoted draw time is their best rep of the day, after a warm-up, on a run they knew was coming. That number is real, in the sense that it happened, and useless, in the sense that nothing about a defensive or competitive draw resembles it.

The number worth having

  • First rep of the session, cold
  • Average of five, not the fastest of five
  • Any round outside the zone voids the rep
  • Gun, holster and cover garment recorded with the time

The cold first rep is the one that generalizes. Everything after it is a demonstration of what you can do once you have already done it.

How to actually get faster

Draw speed is built dry and confirmed live. That is not a budget compromise, it is the correct order: dry fire lets you take a hundred repetitions in the time a range trip gives you ten, and the draw is a motor pattern, so repetitions are the currency.

  • Work the par time down in steps, not leaps. Set the timer 0.2 seconds under your current average and run there until it is comfortable, then take another 0.2. A par two seconds under your ability teaches nothing except panic.
  • Train the two ends separately. Draw to Sight Picture runs a 0.7-second dry par to a sighted hold with no trigger press at all — everything before the shot. Trigger Press works the other end at a 0.3-second dry par. Those two numbers do not add up to a live draw time and are not meant to: they are dry pars for isolated pieces, and the whole thing gets tested on the range.
  • Fix the grip at the holster, not on the target. If the sights arrive canted or the support hand lands late, stop timing. You are practicing a repair.
  • Confirm live, sparingly. One cold rep at the start of a range session, recorded. If the dry number improved and the live number did not, the difference is recoil anticipation, not draw speed.

Drills that measure the draw

Four tests, in ascending order of how much they ask of you:

The Failure to Stop is the one on that list where the distance sets the standard rather than the clock: Mozambique distance and par time covers what changes between 5, 7 and 10 yards, and why the head shot goes before the draw does.

The FAST deserves a word, because it is the closest thing pistol shooting has to a graded draw test. Todd Green’s course of fire starts from concealment with two rounds into a 3×5 card, then a slide-lock reload and four rounds into an 8-inch circle. His rating scale is public: over 10 seconds Novice, under 10 Intermediate, under 7 Advanced, under 5 Expert — and a clean sub-5 run, twice in a row, earned his challenge coin. Misses are paid for in time: one second for the circle, two for the card.

What makes it a draw test rather than a reload test is the order. The hardest shots come first, cold, straight out of the holster — precisely when your grip is least settled. A draw that only works when you have a generous target waiting for it does not survive that.

The Bill Drill approaches it from the other side: one draw and five splits, which usually means the draw is close to half the total time — five splits at 0.30 add up to 1.5 seconds, and so does a decent draw. One thing worth saying plainly

The draw is the one skill where going faster than your competence has an immediate physical cost. Every year people put a round through a thigh reholstering in a hurry or clearing a garment with a finger already inside the guard. There is no draw time worth that, and no timer that rewards it.

Reholster slowly, every single time, and treat it as untimed by rule. Speed belongs to the way out.
