Every shot you’ll ever fire under time pressure starts with the draw. Speed on the beep doesn’t come from rushing — it comes from cleaning up wasted motion in four discrete steps. Skip this work and every drill you run on the timer just burns in bad habits faster.
Set up one IPSC target at 5 yards (5 m). Start with hands at your sides, gun holstered. Run twenty reps of the draw stroke in four steps: (1) full firing grip in the holster with your trigger finger along the frame, (2) draw straight up with the elbow high, (3) join hands at chest level, (4) press the gun out and break the shot as the sights settle on target. Shoot the first ten reps with no time limit — the goal is clean mechanics, not speed. Then run ten more on a timer. Benchmark: A-zone hit under 2.5 seconds, target under 2.0.
Log every rep. Trim 0.1 seconds per session until you own a consistent sub-2.0. Once that’s stable, add concealment, then add a step off the X. This drill belongs in every warmup — new shooters building the pattern, experienced shooters keeping it sharp.
1x IPSC target at 5 yd (5 m). Start: hands at sides, gun holstered. Shot timer optional for the first ten reps, required for the second ten.
A-zone hit = PASS.
Starting benchmark: draw-to-hit under 2.5 seconds.
Target benchmark: consistent under 2.0 seconds with A-zone hits.
Log every rep time.
Speed comes from eliminating wasted motion, not from rushing. If the first step is sloppy, every step after it is slower.
Trim 0.1 seconds per session until sub-2.0 is stable.
Add concealment (cover garment).
Add a step off the X during the draw.
Move the target to 7 yd (7 m) and rebuild the benchmark.
