The Walk-Back Drill is one of the simplest and most revealing diagnostic tools available. Start at 3 yards and fire one round at a small target (B-8 center or 6-inch circle). Take two steps back. Fire again. Repeat until you reach 25 yards.

Each step back increases the difficulty incrementally. At some point, you’ll start missing — and that’s the entire point. The distance where your shots start falling outside the scoring zone is your current accuracy threshold. That’s where you should be training.

This drill works with any pistol at any skill level. A beginner might start dropping shots at 10 yards. An expert might stay clean to 25. Run it every few weeks as a benchmark and watch your threshold distance extend over time. It’s the simplest progress tracker you’ll ever use.

Range Setup

Setup

B-8 bullseye or 6-inch circle target. Start at 3 yards. Fire 1 round, take 2 steps back (~2 yards), fire again. Continue until you reach 25 yards or miss.

Scoring

Track the farthest distance at which you kept all rounds in the scoring zone. Record your threshold distance each session. No time limit.

Tips

Treat every shot like it matters — because it does. The drill only works if you actually try on every round, not just the close ones.

Progression

Once you can clean it to 25 yards standing, add time pressure (3-second par per shot) or shoot it from kneeling or one-handed.
